Next week’s “Movie Monday” 🎥
at Shiralea’s “HydeOut” Venue is the magnificently crafted Black Swan, a 2010 American psychological drama film about the anxiety of being replaced.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, the film stars Natalie Portman, Vincent Cassel, Mila Kunis, Barbara Hershey, and Winona Ryder.

The plot revolves around a production of Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake ballet by the New York City Ballet company. As one of New York’s finest Ballerinas, Nina (Natalie Portman), whose life, like all those in her profession, is completely consumed with dance, struggles to maintain her sanity after winning the lead role in an esteemed production of Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake”.

This production requires a ballerina to play the innocent and fragile White Swan, for which the committed dancer Nina is a perfect fit, as well as the dark and sensual Black Swan, which are qualities better embodied by the new rival Lily (Mila Kunis).

Nina is overwhelmed by a feeling of immense pressure when she finds herself competing for the part, causing her to lose her tenuous grip on reality and descend into madness. But as the two young dancers expand their rivalry into a twisted friendship, Nina begins to get more in touch with her dark side – a recklessness that threatens to destroy her.

For their roles, both Portman and Kunis trained in ballet for several months before filming began, making the film look wholly authentic.
