A short excursion into the history of the “Thai Red Cross”

In 1893, a conflict broke out between Siam (Thailand) and France over land and the left bank of the Mekhong River, which ended in armed conflict. At that time there was no such aid organization in Thailand. A group of women approached the royal family and requested permission to form the Red Cross Unalom Society. The king was very pleased with the proposal and gave his consent as well as a large sum of money. In 1920, the “Thai Red Cross” was recognized by the international committee and has since operated under the umbrella organization of the “International Federation of Red Cross”.

The Thai Red Cross Society remains under the patronage of the royal family, with Queen Sirikit (the Queen Mother after her son's coronation as Rama X) as president and Princess Sirindhorn as vice president.
