The Khao Ra (เขา หรา) is the highest peak on Koh Phangan with 727m. The mountain belongs to the Than Sadet National Park and is located in the northern part of the island. Even if it does not necessarily belong to the biggest challenges in Asia with its good 700 meters, the climb is worthwhile because on the top you will be rewarded with a very nice view. The location allows you to see both Chaloklam and Thong Nai Pan.
To reach the path to the mountain, you first have to drive towards Khao Ra Bungalows. Coming from Thongsala on the main road to Chaloklam, you drive straight on in the first sharp left turn and leave the big road. Continue straight ahead and follow the signs.
The path to the mountain begins with a (unpaved) road, but high on the Khao Ra leads only a jungle trek. The path itself is not very demanding, even if it goes steadily uphill. Nevertheless, sturdy shoes are useful, even to be protected from animals on the ground. It's also a good idea to either wear long clothes or use a mosquito repellent such as sketolene, and bring enough water with you. Depending on the pace and fitness you will reach the top after about 1-2 hours.
Compared to other jungle treks on the island, for example to Bottle Beach or Haad Yuan, Khao Ra can be reached relatively quickly. However, there is also a second path up the mountain, which is a lot longer. At the moment, however, this seems to be hardly used, which is why the jungle here is becoming increasingly dense. It's even easier to reach Viewpoint above the Phaeng Falls, Although this is not nearly as high, but still offers a very nice view over the west coast of Koh Phangan.
